Why use VR for learning and assessment

In the modern workplace it is critical that employees can evaluate their own competency, many workplaces have difficulties with this as it is not always possible to create a consistent assessment, and managers really have to reply on word of mouth. As more and more staff are either working from home or at a distance, or in reduced capacity, it is not so possible for managers to arrange assessments and check on how employees who have complex tasks to undertake are ensuring their compliance and competency. This is especially true of professions where the stakes are high, where there is a risk to life, injury or destruction of property.

By providing a VR experience that allows employees to assess their knowledge and confidence as they apply themselves within the simulation, managers can gain comprehensive information on the behaviours of every employee and assess their ability to cope.

It is often assumed that employees who have worked for many months or years on a particular job have achieved a level of competency but just because they have been doing something for a long time does not mean they are doing it correctly.

It’s not until they are in the VR experience undertaking assessment that they realize that in many situations they can't evaluate what they need to do in ways that are safe and compliant. They find out that in many cases, they only remember some of what they were required to do and are making guesses, which could lead to disastrous results.

We have developed eNetReality to allow organizations to create their own VR learning and assessments. Examples of how these assessments have helped ensure competency are:

  • Working at heights on the Forth Rail Bridge in Scotland
  • Being a volunteer in a community repair shop space
  • Ensuring COVID compliance in hair salon

Example of metrics available from a typical assessment clearly showed below

Each VR assessment has ultimately helped the organization to improve practice, identify competency "danger zones", and increase their overall self-efficacy.
